Never Happy Stamp by zavraan Never Happy Stamp by zavraan
I am pointing at the people who COMPLAIN about this. Not you guys :T

So, I just want to point out that people who whine about this subject, are completely missing the point of character balance. You can NEVER make a character perfect. Otherwise, he or she will be a mary-sue.

If the character has too many bad traits, you complain about how annoying he/she is.

Ok...I just want to get THIS piece I'm gonna writte off of my chest. I don't care what people think about Sonic, Korra, Danny etc. I don't care about that. I just want to enjoy the show. But what really bothers me about one critique a Korra fan said, is: "Korra is a selfish brat"

....Wat? :T Since when? Why? How? Are you just a Korra hater or did she do something that seems selfish? As if Aang wasn't selfish when he couldn't face the pressure of being the avatar. As ifAzula isn't selfish. Heck, as if EVERY villain in avatar isn't selfish.

I will point out why Korra hasnever been selfish in the series.

1. She rescues people from the street by defeated gangsters all by her ow while she was looking for airtemple island.
2. She joined the fireferrits without anyhting in return in order to help them win the contest.
3. She saved Bolin and Mako several times. :T
4. If you're saying she was acting selfish in episode 4, then no. She wasn't. She was SCARED DAMN IT. But she didn't want to show it since she has a lot of respinsebility. She didn't want to face Amon alone to be selfish and keep all the honor to herself, NO. She wanted to get it over with and overcome this fear. But it failed and she cried. That doesn't mean she's weak, but she's strong enough to show she IS scared. A strong charactr like her must show weaknesses.
5. Despite the fact she was jealous about Asami and Mako being together, this is her FIRST time she has delt with hormones and boys. You woul dbe disapointed too if you were her. She didn't know anything about the life of rich people since she lived out the southpole. t's new for her.
6. She claimed that Asami's father was working with the equalists and was right about that. She riskt her life in order to find out. Then she left Mako and Asami be together due to this shocking discovery.
7. A new team avatar is born! They joined forces and completely forget about there agruements. Korra stands up for innocent people and wanted to free her friends. But got kipnapped. That's pretty brave and a lot to take for oher on one day.
8. After she got back in the temple, she emmediately focuses on the invasion. NOT her personal problem.
9. Then Asami started rejecting Mako. Korra now had the chance, but SHE DIDN'T TAKE IT. She was worried and saw they were angry at each other. Even when Mako insisted on going with her to defeat Amon, she sad: You don't have to do that."
10. After the city was take over, she got very frustrated and wanted to end this shit by her own. Selfish? I think not. THE CITY IS TAKEN OVER. YOU'RE DAMN RIGHT I GET FRUSTRATED BY FEAR AND DEFEAT. She hates seeing people sad and scared. She wanted to end this and bring peace back.
11. She thanked the Tarlock, the man who wanted her to do what he wants. She forgives him. Oh, how selfish~ BT
12. even after her bending got taken away and returned home, she didn't even want to LOOK at Mako, despite the fact she adors him. She was too sad to give a damn. Losing your bending is just beyond sad. :c But when she got it back, she said to him: I love you too" Then giving the bending back to Lin, who wern't really building up a friendship at first.

Seriously...IS SHE SELFISH?????? She's the goddamn avatar!

Sigh...sorry for the rant, I needed to say this. Oh yeah, I forgot about one thing. And despite that episode where they firt kiss, Korra never wanted to harm Bolin. She apologized and healed his wound. She also apologized to Mako and asked it they could still be friends. I have NOTHING agains Asami. Nothing. But I stick with Makorra because I like thse two. Jealousy is also a very painfull emotion. You can't overcome it easily.

And oh yeah...as if Sonic, Silver and Shadow arn't selfish at times. BT Sonic is the best and the fastest. He gets cocky at times. Shadow is the ultimate. So he prides himself with that. And Silver has telekenises. Awesome power. So yeah...they can be selfish too because of their abilities.

Thank you for reading.

Oh and if some of you disagree: YOU SEE THIS CUP OF CARES??? ......IT'S EMPTY!

I believe moderation is the key. If the character is only having bad traits, then they are an Anti-Sue, which is just as bad as a Mary Sue. Also, of course, is the Mary Sue who has only good traits. Both are equally bad.

A good character has some good and some bad traits, not only one or the other. It's not that the people are never happy, it's just that they seem to have this mentality:

perfect = bad
So...
perfectly OPPOSITE (i.e. ugly not pretty, stupid not smart, etc) = good

However that isn't the case. opposite in every way ≠ good character.

OMGOSH just found Bryan Konietzko's tumblR and he openly states on a topic about the recent leaks of episodes 4-6 that they're currently working on a Book 4!!
Dancing Emote by MissBezzUltra Excitement by de-Mote:squee:Massively excited by CookiemagiK:squee:Ultra Excitement by de-MoteDancing Emote by MissBezz

  • "We typically deliver the episodes to the network quite close to their U.S. premieres, but in the case of Book 3, we have actually already finished the entire season as of last week. The network has some plans in the works for it and needs to wait on its release, so we have been keeping quiet while keeping our noses to the Book 4 grindstone. Unfortunately, the longer the episodes sit on all these shelves all over the world, the probability of leaks increases." - Bryan Konietzko

I'm seriously...like...I just....I can't even....HOMGOSH YES PLEASE!

Yay MaKorra forever!  I seriously can't get over those two...and I'm not usually the type of person for "shipping".  That show has my feels in a bundle.

Korra isn't selfish as much as she is just a little too much of a mix of a few negative traits that make the character relatviely weak

stuff like she has a sense of self entitlement
the fact that she's a natural at the other three bending arts, but whenever she starts getting frustrated with airbending a little too easy
she's not that respectful with boundaries & gives into her emotions too quickly (namely anger) and she wants to paint herself as such a badass that she tries to ignore her fear more often than she tries to overcome them

the hatred probably stems from the fact that aang was such a great, well-rounded character while she was such a one-dimensional character, but that's unfair

Aang was a monk & the war helped to mature him even more
Korra was sheltered all her life & just doesn't really think long-term
she acts more like an immature teenager because she hasn't had the need to grow up that aang has
she wants to live up to the name the others before her lived up to her & wants to do it as quickly as possible, damn the consequences

the fact that we had such a short first season to beat amon while we had THREE to beat the firelord also stunts her character developement & it seems like they really wanted to paint the world around her before actually delving deeper into her character developement

luckily they already started developing her more in the 2nd season (even though they start it off weak with the abusing the avatar state & making her completely ignore what's left of her airbender training since she just wanted to blast air at stuff)

I can relate to that on so many occasions, it's never about look, it's about the personalities of the character but there are too many rabid fans of those with perfect bodies it's too unbelievable. DX

I think Korra was a little selfish when she wanted to continue her avatar training with Tenzin when he wasn't ready. I say this because this was before she knew of what kind of trouble was in the city. She couldn't have been thinking "Well the world needs me now, I must train!" No, she wanted to continue training just because she wanted to; she enjoyed training and was eager to learn airbending so she would be a full fledged avatar.

However, please don't think me saying she is selfish at the beginning as a negative criticism; it's not. Korra showing some selfishness in the beginning isn't bad. Heck any character showing some selfishness isn't bad; it's realistic. Many feel that way at some point, some more so than others. And just because a character's defining trait is selfishness doesn't mean they will never come through in the end and help someone else.

For Korra, I feel she was only truly selfish (and it wasn't even close to being a defining trait for her) for a short while; as soon as she found out about Amon, her motivation to train became more urgent. It was no longer about just completing her training; it was more about protecting the people from Amon. And even when she did have some selfishness in the very beginning, it wasn't shoved down anyone's throats; she still had a good heart then as she did by the end of the season. She still had the desire to help people and do what's right.

So in short, I don't think Korra was a "selfish brat" at any point in the series. The beginning I feel she did have some selfishness but it didn't really impact her morality in any way; she still had the desire to help other people out, as shown as when she helped strangers in the street during her first stay at the city. I do like her characterization and how she handles things; it's so different from Aang's way; she isn't just a 'female Aang'. If she were that way, I don't think the show would have been as enjoyable, in my opinion.

Actually I forgot to explain something. When I say "selfish" and "selfish brat", I mean two different things. I don't regard the two terms as meaning the same thing.

Selfish, I feel doesn't only involve being a jerk to others and looking out out just for themselves; to me, selfish can refer to taking an action based on just what they want. In this case, Korra leaving to Republic City because that is what she wanted to do; she didn't know the city was in peril from Amon and the Equalists, so her wanting to leave was more likely because of what she wanted.

A selfish brat I feel would refer to someone who has too much selfishness. It isn't a minor trait; it's more a defining one. A character who is a selfish brat would be one that only looks out for themselves and causes more harm than good to others because of this. They wouldn't be willing to help anyone unless there was something in it for them; a trait Korra does not have.

I hope this clears up any confusion.

Korra...a selfish BRAT? I'm stunned that people think she's selfish O_O I haven't watched much of this new Avatar series, but Korra seems like a pretty awesome character if you ask me. And you gave pretty good reasons why she isn't 'selfish' as some people claim she is. Korra selfish...ha! I laugh at ignorant people who think she is selfish.

Well, you really should watch it. XD It's AMAZING. And the only kid show on Nick that gives EFFORT making it. :/

Korra is ment to be tough. She is confident, independend, strong and a tough girl. But even a character like her can have some flaws. But duh. She needs flaws. :/

People are only selfish when they keep all the honor to themselves and treat others like shit. She never did that.

Mhmmm hm that's true! I swear some fans just aren't happy with certain characters no matter what they do. They just complain and complain and complain about the character's flaws. I personally think it's good for characters to have flaws no matter how tough they are, I don't complain about it because everyone has at least one or two flaws about them.

Wha-? Oh my lord...is it about the Makorra and Masami thing going on? *facepalm* The show isn't JUST about romance. It's about so many other things other than couples. Reminds me of the Naruto fandom how people complain about either NaruHina or NaruSaku happening -__- I like NaruHina but I don't really give two hoots what the couples are in certain shows anymore.

And yes. I am talking about them. Geez, just because Mako is with Korra now, doesn't mean Asami is all alone. She can pair up wth another guy. :T Same goes for Bolin, as he got some crazy fangirls. ;3

Some people complain about Makorra because it was rushed.
Me: Oh yeah. Like Asami and Mako had a huge build up. They got together in like what? ONE episode? While Makorra had a whole build up towards the end?

I hate it when people misjudge a character for one thing. Whether they like a bad guy for ONE THING he did right or despise a good guy for ONE THING done wrong.

Look at the OTHER STUFF the character does more frequently, people! Seriously.

Normal people make mistakes and seemingly perfect people can crumble. It's how people, and characters, grow and learn. All in the appearance according to me.

I love working with characters who have a lot of faults. It always reminds me that nobody's perfect.

Thing is that both extremes are bad:
1) if character is too perfect it's rather boring to watch it because it's static - i mean it doesn't develop, no need to learn lessons and etc.
2) if character is too bad it's hard to feel any sympathy towards it. Also why would i feel any sympathy for someone who is a complete monster? It's just unnatural.

So to make people interested you should either give your character some redeeming qualities - for example he or she is an asshole but would never hurt a child - or make character slightly less perfect - for example, he/she is a person who is good at whatever their job is but is very impatient.

PS
Aside from that - I'm not a big fan of Korra and new series but even i admit that she isn't selfish.

I also don't get why people are bitching so much about the love triangle. Seriously, the season had ended, Mako and Korra are together, just get over it! Asami will find another guy, Bloin will find another girl, the end.

It's really irritating. First the whole Aang x Zuko, Katara shit, and now THIS. Jezus...:iconsokkafacepalmplz:
